You celebrate it every year along with the special father figure in your life, but how much do you really know about Father’s Day? Here are some facts you might find interesting:

• Father’s Day is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June.

• Many countries in Europe, the Americas and Africa have adopted the U.S. date for celebrating Father’s Day, but most countries in Catholic Europe celebrate it on the 19th of March.

• Father’s Day officially began in 1910, when 27-year-old Sonora Dodd thought of the celebration as a way to honor the man who raised her and her five siblings after their mother’s death. He was born in June, thus she proposed to celebrate Father’s Day in this month of the year.

• In 1924, Father’s Day became a national event in the U.S. after former President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it as such.

• In Germany, it is a tradition for groups of young and old men to do a hiking tour with vehicles or wagons pulled by manpower. In the wagons are wine or beer and traditional regional food.

• In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the birthday of the king and people wear “the color of the day” the king was born. For example, Father’s Day is currently celebrated on king Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday, the 5th of December, and Thai people wear yellow, because this is the colour of the day of Monday, the day the king was born.

• In some countries, the rose is the official flower of Father’s Day, symbolizing love, gratitude and appreciation (also, it is the official flower of the month of June). Wearing a red rose signifies honoring a living dad, whereas a white rose represents a deceased father.

• On Father’s Day, it is customary for children to bring breakfast in bed to their dad, mirroring the similar tradition associated with Mother’s Day.

Daughters spend approximately 50 percent more than sons on gifts for their dads on Father’s Day.

• The most common gifts associated with Father’s Day are greeting cards, neckties and slippers.

• According to the Greeting Card Association, Father’s Day is the fourth biggest day for sending greeting cards, after Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
